Alpine cuisine and the Julian Alps Hiking Trail in Washington DC
Jože Godec from Pension Resje at Bohinj, Uroš Štefelin from Vila Podvin in Radovljica and Tomaž Sovdat from Dobra Vila restaurant in Bovec are three Alpine chefs, who are currently (May 13 to 16) showcasing their dishes as well as the beauty and culinary specialties of the Julian Alps with the promotion of the new Julian Alps Hiking Trail at a culinary week at the Embassy of Slovenia in Washington DC.
The new 200 mile-long circular Julian Alps Hiking Trail will be officially launched in the fall later this year. The trail, which will link the Soča valley with Kranjska Gora, Radovljica, Bled, and Bohinj, was conceived by the Community of the Julian Alps. The Community unites ten municipalities in the Soča valley and the Upper-Carniola regions, their tourist institutes and Triglav National Park. Offering hikers the chance to seek refreshments and rest stops will form an important part of the trail.
Hiking and cuisine are two exceptionally important products for the American market. The community responded to the invitation from Ambassador Stanislav Vidovič by bringing together top chefs form the area with a number of events at the Embassy promoting Alpine cuisine and the Julian Alps Hiking Trail.
Attendees include tourist agencies, food journalists, spouses of ambassadors, senators, congressmen/women and members of the Neighbors' Club One. The Julian Alps will showcase some of its traditional foods such as "trdinka" red corn polenta, pork crackling, smoked Slovenian trout, Tolmin cheese, mohant cheese, Bohinj cheese, "jota", chocolate covered "tepka" pears and other honey products. Wines from the wine cellar Goriška Brda will add to the overall experience.
